8. Winter’s Bite: It All Depends on Appropriate Clothing

To a million people, winter means a million different things. For those living north of the Arctic Circle, it is endless darkness pierced by brittle cold, where survival depends on layers of fur, wool, and tradition.  For others, such as those walking the icy streets of Sweden or navigating a frosty morning commute in New York or Tokyo, winter is both a challenge and a rhythm of life. Yet despite the countless names for ice, snow, and wind across languages and cultures, there is one common thread — winter is cold, unforgiving, and at times, treacherous.

Clothing becomes more than fashion when temperatures fall. It becomes a matter of comfort, resilience, and even safety.  The right coat, scarf, or pair of boots can mean the difference between a day enjoyed and a day endured. To be poorly dressed for the cold is to invite misery — and in some cases, real danger.  Those who have lived through blizzards, whiteouts, or biting sub-zero winds know the truth of the old saying: nature is not something to be beaten, only respected.

Despite all the debates about global climate change, and despite the measurable rise of the thermometer in many parts of the world, cold winters are not disappearing.  They are shifting, reshaping, and sometimes striking where they are least expected. For example, warmer oceans may paradoxically bring heavier snowfalls to places unaccustomed to such extremes.  The cold, it seems, is not vanishing anytime soon.  For decades to come, we will still step outside to frosted windows, frozen sidewalks, and breath turning to mist in the air.

This makes our choices in winter clothing all the more critical. A good winter wardrobe is not simply about staying warm; it is about enabling life to continue — work, travel, exploration, or leisure — even in the harshest conditions.  From lightweight, high-performance fabrics to the enduring warmth of natural fibres like wool, clothing technology has advanced enormously in the past half-century.  Yet the principle remains the same: the closer your clothing matches your environment and activity, the more you will thrive.

No one has put it more succinctly than explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes, who famously remarked: “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothing.”  His words ring especially true in winter.  For the skier tackling alpine slopes, the farmer repairing fences in a frozen field, or the commuter waiting on a wind-whipped railway platform, the right clothing transforms the experience.  A scarf, for example, may seem a simple accessory — but the warmth and protection it provides for the neck and chest can make the outdoors infinitely more bearable. This is why at Aoraki, we place such care in crafting scarves that combine luxury fibres with practical design, ensuring comfort without compromise.

Ultimately, winter’s bite depends on where you live and what you do.  A Scandinavian child might see snow as a playground, while someone in a southern city may view it as an inconvenience.  But for all of us, it is a season that demands respect.  With the right clothing, winter becomes less of an obstacle and more of a backdrop — a setting for resilience, beauty, and life lived fully.  At Aoraki, we believe appropriate clothing is the key to facing winter well — and a beautifully made scarf is the perfect place to start.
